STRING ORCHESTRA OF NEW YORK CITY

In 1998, the Association sponsored performances in Utah by a string orchestra comprised of noted soloists. Following their performances in Utah, the members of this string orchestra joined together to form the String Orchestra of New York City, or as they are also known, the SONYC. On September 30, 1999, National Orchestral Association patrons from around the world attended a wonderful concert given by the String Orchestra of New York City at New York's Merkin Concert Hall. The program included a work by Edward Elgar, and a new composition by American composer Christopher Theofanidis. The National Orchestral Association is very proud to be associated with this organization, and to have had an opportunity to be a part of its formation. The members of SONYC have continued their educational outreach activities in area schools, building on the successful outreach program which they initiated in Utah in 1998.

On May 13th, 2000, the National Orchestral Association, Park City Bank, The Judson Foundation, and several other organizations sponsored a concert by the String Orchestra of New York City Octet ("SONYC Octet") at The Sundance Resort, as part of its continuing "Spirit of Sundance Series." On May 14th, the Octet gave a Mother's Day concert at the Eccles Center for the Performing Arts in Park City.

The National Orchestral Association would like to thank the String Orchestra of New York City and composer Christopher Theofanidis for providing the musical excerpt used on this web site. The excerpt is from Mr. Theofanidis' "Visions and Miracles," which was performed by the String Orchestra of New York City at Merkin Concert Hall on September 30, 1999.

The String Orchestra of New York City has been invited to participate in the Noon Day Concert Series that is held at New York's historic Trinity Church, located at Broadway and Wall Street in the heart of the financial district.  SONYC will be performing its first concert at this famous church on Thursday, February 8, 2001 at 1pm.
